Scientist I, T cell Discovery
KEY ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, execute and critically analyze in vitro experiments to support research and development of T cell therapies with scientific rationale
- Able to manage their workload, design and perform bench activities independently or with minimal supervision
- Critically analyze experiments, interpret complex data, and draw appropriate conclusions with scientific rigor
- Able to troubleshoot critical issues or problems, and determine causes and possible solutions
- Able to manage project timelines and perform time sensitive experiments to drive discovery programs accordingly with departmental, functional and external stakeholders
- Contribute significantly and independently to multiple projects and execute in parallel
- Maintain complete laboratory records and prepare technical data reports and presentations. Experience in electronic lab notebook is a plus.
- Participate and thrive in an interactive, team-oriented culture and be able to work well in a highly cross-functional team environment
- Comfortably working with his/her team members in the laboratory
PREFERRED EDUCATION:
- BSc in immunology, oncology or related field with a minimum of 9 years’ experience within the area of focus; or
- MSc in immunology, oncology or related field with a minimum of 7 years’ experience within the area of focus; or
- PhD in immunology, oncology or related field with a minimum of 0-2 years’ experience within the area of focus
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- The ideal candidate will have direct hands-on experience in establishing in vitro assays for adoptive T cell therapies.
- Expertise in human T cell isolation, culture, engineering and complex cell-based assays for functional characterization (such as cytotoxicity assays, cytokine detections and T cell phenotypes by flow cytometry) and phenotypic analysis of human T cells.
- Consistent record of innovative contributions to study of T cell functions (Publications in top-tier journals and/or patent inventorship)
- Strong experience with general cell culture work (culture, expansion, media formulations, passaging, preservation, co-culture systems).
- Extensive experience with flow cytometry assays and analysis; more complex analysis and cell sorting experience a plus
- Strong molecular biology knowledge and experience (i.e. PCR, Western blots, RT-PCR, qPCR, designing constructs); more complex experience and design is a plus
- Tasked with leading projects (either technical or scientific project specific) under guidance, designing the timelines and experiments, with opportunities to present data to leadership is applicable to the role.
- You will be responsible for designing and executing experiments for the scientific research and development strategies with the input of the supervisor. Works independently with their team on a variety of complex assays and projects. Comfortable with analysis of situations or data that require an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercise independent judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Scientific background in immuno-oncology and adoptive cell therapy.
- Design, execution, analysis and documentation of experiments supporting research and development of T cell therapies
- Tissue culture and manipulation of both mammalian cell lines and primary human lymphocyte (PBMC, T cells)
- Lentivirus vector transduction and production
- Apply up-to-date developments in cell therapy-related technologies to design and create the next generation cell therapy platforms
- Extensive experience using and analyzing broad range of immunology and oncology assays; cell therapy experience ideal, more complex experience a plus
- Extensive experience with flow cytometry assays and analysis; more complex analysis and cell sorting experience a plus
- Extensive experience in sterile tissue culture technique and working with human cells
- Experience in data production and reporting for IND-enabling studies

The salary range for this position is $120,000 to $135,000, annually, with the opportunity to earn an annual bonus. The salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on Lyell’s compensation practices and an applicant’s qualifications and experience. Employees are also eligible to participate in Lyell’s Equity Incentive Plan.
